About a photographer.

Duane Michals.

While researching sequence photography authors, my attention was drawn to Duane Michals. There are elements of enigma in his black and white photography, portraits full of emotions, beautiful, and thrilling stories.  

Duene Michals was born in 1932 in Pennsylvania. His work has been recognized in the world since the 1960s. He has been working with stars, and is known for photographs of Marilyn Monroe, Meryl Streep, Sting, Andy Warchol and many other celebrities.

Michals didn't work in his studio, he used to photograph his models in their apartments, in their natural environment. This was described as quite unique at the time. He used to visit Andy Warchol in his family home in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania where a very well-known photograph of Warchol's mother, Julia Warchola was taken.  'She was a nice little eastern European lady, a babushka, you'd look in the kitchen and she was there making a soup' says Michals (Michals, D. 2021).

The sequential photographs I would like to present are portraits of Andy Warchol, which I found interesting. Warchol was photographed by Michals on multiple occasions, but there is one set of sequential photographs that catches my eye. Michals states 'When I photographed Warhol, the portrait was in the character, the mystery—if there is one—of Warhol.' (Michals, D, 2014). When I look at these photographs, they make me wonder what Warchol was thinking about, he looks concerned about something.  

Andy Warchol was an American pop art artist. Born in 1928, in Pennsylvania as Ondrej Warchola, to a family of eastern European roots. He dropped A of his surname, to make it sound less eastern. He traveled the world; his travels shaped his life and art. Warchol passed away in 1987 in New York.

Solo sequential images. Final sequence. Parabol.

Below you can see work created in my garden with a support of a model, jumping on the trampoline, having a good time.

The idea of taking photographs of person jumping on the trampoline was to show a parabolic motion of a model as well as her movements. Movement of her hair, arms and her clothing. Model's name is Zuzanna and she is my daughter, therefore the choice was simple.  

Presented session counts thirty individual shots taken with I-phone 11, combined in to contact sheet with use of a Photoshop.

As a final piece of my solo sequential images I've decided to choose below photographs. These are the shots I liked the most, I find them dynamic and happy.

To take this photographs I have used I-phone 11, changed them in to black and white photographs using phone camera options. Next I have transfered them to the computer, used Paint and Screenpresso to create a seqence of four photographs. 

As I have mentioned previously, I was planning to show a parabolic movement.  

I am really happy with final result of the session. We both enjoyed our little mother-daughter fun time in the garden. I am attracted to the contrast between the fence and the sky, I decided to emphazize it by changing photographs in to black and white shots. Also movement seem to be more visible in black and white version. I like how picture background is cut in half due to dark fence and bright sky.

Advertising research. Millennials and English language.

In this post I am going to discuss an advertisement in relation to international Gen-Y (Millennials) which will link to my advert of  English language dictionary. '95% still watch TV, but Netflix edges out traditional cable as the preferred provider. Cord-cutting in favor of streaming services is the popular choice. This generation is extremely comfortable with mobile devices but 32% will still use a computer for purchases. They typically have multiple social media accounts'. DMUIC (Target Market Behaviours, 2023). In regards to my own advert as I would like to reach my target market I would put this advert in social media like Facebook and Instagram. I would also invest in a street billboard campaign to reach to Millennials traveling from work, spending their time waiting in the traffic. 'Millennials place their trust in brands with superior product history such as Apple and Google' DMUIC (Target Market Behaviours, 2023), therefore I believe an Oxford Online Dictionary, as a well known and respected brand, would be a product Millennials will be willing to look in to. I understand that we live fast in today's world, and not everyone will be spending time looking for words and synonyms, therefore this advert is directed to professionals, linguists, international students and individuals looking to leverage their career. 

Professional English opens the door to a career worldwide.

English-speaking world expands day by day. Oxford Online dictionary is a source of 500000 words, branded with a quality mark, and I believe it can support worldwide societies in their studies and paths of career. It is also a great source of a cultural and historical information, for this reason it would be useful in fields like film, translation, and many others.

Major project initial ideas and project sign off

 For my major project this term I would like to write a content article on Therapy with cats. Article will be written with a help of Microsoft Office and Flipsnack. I am planning to use free photography from numerous sources. I would also like to talk about my own experience as a cat owner and about my gorgeous fluffy friend, Masha.

Major project: SMART objective.

In previous posts you can see my initial idea for the project and my Milanote board with the research. Now it is time to write my SMART objective for the project. As you can see below SMART is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timely.

It is going to be my first large project. Main topic of the project was Etymology of English language. Specific topic was an Influence of Old Norse languages on English language. However I have decided to change the subject. I would rather do a content article, on my favourite subject , which is simply ... cats. Specyfic subject for the article will be a Therapy with cats. I will create the article with the use of a Microsoft word and Flipsnack. I am planning to use photographs from numerous sources. Project will be completed at the beginning of December and published on my website.

Final project ideas generation

I am studying English language, and for my project I will be preparing an article or an essay on an aspect of English language. Overall topic I have decided to choose is English etymology. 

Etymology (French etimologie; Latin etymologia) - The branch of linguistics which deals with determining the origin of words and the historical development of their form and meanings (Oxford English Dictionary). 

My work on project started of research on Old English and etymology of English language. I came across of articles on changes in English language that started in 17th century, and formed Early Modern English. This subject was in my field of interests, however I was not sure if this subject is what I want to write about.

During further research I red about Old Norse influence on English language. This subject interest me the most due to 9th, 10th and 11th century invasions of Vikings which are in my general zone of interest. I like to read and watch documentaries about that period of English history.

In my work I will concentrate on researching and writing about invasions of Vikings in 9th, 10th and 11th century and their influence on English language. I would like to show a linguistics maps and photographs in the subject.

The Final Advert.

I have chosen to advertise an online dictionary as it is a tool I like to use during my academic work. I find it the most helpful. Oxford Dictionary is a very well known and respected name.

 It has been my first experience of making an advert and I am pleased with how it looks. Using rounded elements (key, logo and font) complements the final outcome of the work.

Creating the advert.

To be able to create an advert we have started working in adobe express.

First part of work was creating a logo. In order to do that I had to look for main element of the logo, which I chose to be a book and a magnifing glass icon.

Adding text:

Editing text in the logo. The idea of making logo round in shape was inspired by original Oxford University logo.

Changing background of the logo to "no fill".

Preparing the flyer's background.

First I had to create empty flyer in adobe express. Then I have looked for right photography to use as a bacground of the advert. I have used unsplash website and found below picture.

 

 unsplash photography was downloaded to my computer, then upladed to adobe access.

Later during the day of work I have decided to add a QR code to the website as well as web address.

To generate QR code I have visited the website barcode generator

Generated barcode was downloaded to my computer and added to my advert in adobe express.

Then I have added website link under the tag line and moved elemets around the flyer to make it look the way I wanted.

Advert Ideas and Plan.

Today I have started preparing a plan for an advertisement of an online dictionary. Using a dictionary is crucial in my studding and my planned work. It is one of the most useful tools for me in this moment. I believe online dictionaries are the best source of academic and professional vocabulary. 

I've chosen Oxford Dictionary due to it's history, functionality and very good reputation.

Sequential Images.

During my Digital art session, I was asked to create sequential images. I have worked with my course friend Karyna on below photographs.

First and second contact sheets are showing a story. Awaiting.

We have created above photographs during our short walk around the DMU campus. Photographs were taken with I-Phone 11 then transferred to the computer. Next I have used a Photoshop to create a contact sheet.   

Third contact sheet shows Karyna throwing a hat. The idea for below photographs was to show a movement of the object as well as movement of a model, her expressions, movement of her body, hair. Karyna has threw the hat twice, at the last photograph the hat is gone, looks like it has flew away.

Below photographs were taken in the classroom - January studio. I have used I-Phone 11 to take them. It is a sequence of multiple shots. They were transferred to the computer first and then on to the contact sheet with Photoshop.
