Photography research. The role of light / Terry O'Neil

For my project research I decided to continue looking in to Terry O'Neil's photographs as I find them fascinating due to the light used to create the atmosphere and the story of the photograph. Looking more in to O'Neill's techniques and life I decided to develop below key points.

  • History of Terry O'Neill and how he became a photographer.
  • O'Neill's ideas behind most famous portraits of stars and royal family.
  • What kind of photographer was O'Neill? Stars commentary on his work methods.
  • Terry O'Neill says: "I photographed people how I saw them. They were natural. When I started off doing reportage at the airport, I'd sit in the area where the passengers would sit as opposed to the area where all the other photographers would be waiting." (2009)

Below photograph is a portrait of a well known American sports commentator, football star and actor O.J. Simpson.  Photograph has been taken in the pool hall, circa 1980.

We can see O. J. Simpson standing with his arms behind his body, in a confident pose, half of his face and body covered by the shadow. Light behind him pointed at the pool table shows his silhouette.  Simpson is dressed casually. That could tell us it was a relaxing evening with group of friends. His face is divided exactly in half by the light and shadow, there is a mystery in this portrait, like Simpson does not want us to get to know him to well. His face expression can be a signal to the viewer, saying not to come to close.

Picture was taken just after O.J. Simpson retired  from the sports career and started his acting career. 1980 is the time O. J. Simpson started dating a woman that became his wife few years later, another few years later he has gone thru the trial accused of her murder.

When researching Terry O'Neill we can see that was a renowned British photographer known for his iconic portraits of celebrities, musicians, and cultural figures. His photography methods combined technical skill with an intuitive understanding of his subjects, resulting in captivating and often intimate images. O'Neill's approach varied depending on the shoot and subject. O'Neill was known for his ability to capture candid moments and candid expressions from his subjects. Rather than staging sets or poses, he often preferred to photograph his subjects in their natural environments, whether it was backstage at a concert, on the streets of London, or in their own homes. This approach allowed him to create portraits that felt authentic and unguarded, offering viewers a glimpse into the personality and character of his subjects. He was skilled at building rapport with his subjects, which helped to put them at ease during photo shoots. His easy-going nature and genuine interest in people allowed him to establish trust and connection, resulting in more relaxed and spontaneous portraits. This process often involved spending time with his models before and during the shoot, getting to know them on a personal level, and creating a comfortable environment in which they could express themselves freely. O'Neill frequently utilized natural light in his photography, preferring its soft, flattering quality over harsh artificial lighting. Whether shooting outdoors or indoors near a window, he would often position his subjects in areas where natural light was abundant, allowing him to capture their features in a natural and flattering way. This approach added a sense of warmth and authenticity to his portraits, enhancing their visual appeal. He had a keen eye for composition and framing, which he used to create visually striking images. He experimented with different angles, perspectives, and framing techniques to capture dynamic and interesting compositions. Whether shooting close-ups, full-body portraits, or group shots, he paid careful attention to the arrangement of elements within the frame, ensuring that each image was visually compelling and balanced.

First Photography shoot for the project.

My first photography shoot for the project took place in my living room on a Saturday morning. My daughter was posing to a black and white portraits, she was instructed to sit in certain spots in the room so I could catch the light on her face.

Below you can see a photographs taken in the natural light in my living room about 10 AM.

In below shots model is sitting in about 2 meter distance from the window. Window is the main source of light and it's at the right side (from the photographer's perspective). The other source of light was a glass panel in the main door at the left, this source of light is about 4 meters away from the model and it was in the shade, so very little light was reaching the model from that side.

focal length 35 mm, f/4.5 1/8 shutter speed , ISO 800, EXP -1

focal length 44 mm, f/5 1/8 shutter speed , ISO 800, EXP -1

Second location - model was posing in upstairs bedroom, mid day, in a nicely lighted room. Light was coming via window located on right side (from photographer's perspective) and it was the only source of light.

Ideas and Planning for Photography Project.

As a first large project of a second term we will be working on a portrait  photography project.

During the project preparation I had many ideas in my head, although I was not sure if I'll be able to realize them. Firstly I wanted to use colour, make background of a different colour, using basic colour pallet. Paint my face in desired colours and use self portrait technique to express emotions in various colours. This project would not be easy to realize due to my work and school timing frame, therefore I have started researching photographers looking for some other idea as an inspiration.

I have started with Terry O'Neil and his portraits.

I found below photograph of Helena Bonham Carter and it gave me an idea of a photoshoot in my own garden, during the day. I wanted to use an Ivy wall as a background. As for the props I prepared a flower crowns for the model.

I have asked my daughter (8) if she would like to pose, but due to our school and work schedule we could only shoot on a Weekend and the weather was not great therefore I have started realizing my third plan. The plan was a photoshoot also inspired by Terry O'Neil and his black and white portraits with the use of different sources of light.

I find the light in photography a most important part. Light builds the depth, gives the meaning to the portraits. I really enjoy reading O'Neill's photography, finding the depth, contemplating the lightning techniques used and the composition.

For the photoshoot I have planned to use natural light coming in to my living room between 10 AM and noon on Saturday. I  planned to shoot in my bedroom on the same day in the afternoon as the afternoon light nicely lights up my bedroom and gives very warm feeling.

My pictures can be seen in my first project photoshoot post.

Studio and natural light practice photoshoot.

Last Monday we were instructed how to prepare for outdoor portrait photoshoot and studio portrait shoot. I went outside with my two friends to practice shooting portraits in natural light conditions.

I find black and white photography more interesting, it appeals to me more than color photography, for this reason I have chosen black and white mode for most of the photographs. Although I like how green door background plays with Iwona's coat on some of the shoots.

The camera I am using is CANON EOS 450D, 55 mm lens. I used ISO 200 for the shoot outside.

I chose my three best shots. I like the composition and contrast on all below pictures.

Sandra : focal length 43 mm, f/5.6 1/30 shutter speed , ISO 200, EXP 0.7

Sandra : focal length 43 mm, f/5.6 1/50 shutter speed , ISO 200, EXP 0.7

Iwona : focal length 55 mm, f/5.6 1/25 shutter speed , ISO 200, EXP 0.7

Later at the same lesson we were invited to the studio where we could take portraits of a model - Lauren. We were instructed to take low light photographs, ISO 400 and exposure compensation about -2. Below you can see my contact sheets from the studio photoshoot.

I chose below two shots as I like the composition, how Lauren's pose is framed. I think the lightning on below photographs plays a very important role, model's face is visible, not too bright. The contrast between light and dark is just right. I have managed to set the camera, so the image is sharp. I think it's a beautiful shot of Lauren.

 Lauren : focal length 27 mm, f/4 1/15 shutter speed , ISO 200, EXP -2

Below picture is slightly brighter. I like the contrast between Lauren's face, hair and her black clothes. I think the pose is very strong. Lauren looks confident due to her pose and the way I have framed her.

 Lauren : focal length 29 mm, f/4.5  1/13 shutter speed , ISO 200, EXP -2

I am really pleased with the result of the lesson and both outside and studio session. I enjoy using the camera and learning about the setting. Composition and framing are my biggest challenges.

Above and Below: Class practice.

Today we were asked to complete a class practice called "Above and Below". This was a practice of photography, with different settings. High and low angle portraits. The setting we were practicing were aperture, ISO and exposure.

We discussed a photography of well known artists in the class, the one that took my attention was a photography of Paul McCartney taken by Terry O' Neill in 1970. I think the light in this shot played the main role, McCartney's face is highlighted, stands out from the picture. The next thing I am noticing straight away is the piano. People are just the background. This photograph is about the music, I can see the passion in McCartney's face and body. I think the photograph tells us a really interesting story.

I have looked further in to Terry O'Neill's photographs and could not decide on the one I find the most interesting. I loved the photographs of Bridget Bardot and Audrey Hepburn. Photographer shows their emotions and their beauty in a very interesting way. Most of the portraits are black and white, I have decided to search for some colored photograph and found one of Dustin Hoffman, which I think is very interesting due to the choice of background. I like how the actor kind of blends in with the black part of the wall. What catches my attention first is the yellow wall with the writing on it and actor's face that stands out from the black part of the wall. I think the photographer had to know exactly how to set the light to make the face stand out but also not too bright. I do see some triangular shapes in the background, that was mentioned to us as one of the elements that make the composition more interesting.

During the session we went in a groups to take portrait photography, practice the settings and composition. I went for a shoot with two of my course friends and we posed to each others photographs. When we returned we were asked to create the contact sheets in Photoshop. To do this we had to click on File, then automate and then the contact sheet. We had to save it under the JPG format in a Desktop folder and then we could use it for our blogs.
Below you can see the contact sheets of my photographs.

Later we were asked to choose few of our photographs we would like to talk more about, look at their EXIF details and explain how the settings and framing with composition worked in below pictures.

Sandra.

F/5, 1/60, ISO 400, FL 40 mm, no exposure compensation.

It is a slightly higher angle image. I chose to show it as I like the composition, Sandra's silhouette hits the points of interest in the rule of thirds. Picture is divided in to two parts by the curb in the background. Background colors are mild, that makes Sandra stands out. We can see the triangular shape of the ground on the first plan. Sandra's outfit also creates a desired shape. Unfortunately we both were working on our cameras at the time of shoot and Sandra was busy looking in her camera screen. I used ISO 400 and F/5, it was a sunny day but the area was shaded and I needed a bit more sunlight.

Iwona.

F/10, 1/60, ISO 200, FL 27 mm, Black & white.

It is a low angle image, I decided to lay down on the low hedge in front of the bench to take this shot, I like how the hedge shows in the first plan. The way Iwona sits, helped me to compose the picture according to the rule of thirds. I used ISO 200 and F/10 as the bench was situated in a sunny spot and I did not want too bright spots in the photograph. I can see now that it could be composed slightly different. I think composition is something I need to work more on.

As the final piece I have decided to use below photographs. I called it The bench. I like both photograph's composition and how they look together joined in one piece. The bench is a symbol of awaiting for something new.

Object lesson: Lego man with a torch.

As a one of my first creative projects I chose to work with a little Lego figure of a man with a torch. I chose Lego figure for a simple reason - it's legs and arms can be moved and posed in different ways. I was thinking of a ways I can use the figure to create something new.

The figure reminds me of a of wizard. His face features are similar to the wizard from the children's movie, I have watched over Christmas holiday (it's a Disney movie called "Wish"). When I think of wizard it brings a Tolkien's trilogy to my mind and one of main characters - Gandalf The Grey, who after the transformation became Gandalf the White. Merlin is another wizard character, while looking for an inspirational image I have found below artwork and it drew my attention due to beautiful colours, dragons and a castle in a first plan.

Merlin - picture source                                                       Gandalf - picture source

Gandalf and Merlin are very powerful wizards. Character of wizard in a literature can be god-like as well as demonic, very powerful, strong, not possible to win with. They are all-knowing, seers, oracles, prophets, saviours and fighters.
Gandalf was described by J. R. R. Tolkien, (1937, p. 8) as 'an old man with a staff. He had a tall pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak, a silver scarf over which a white beard hung down below his waist, and immense black boots.'
As I never really got o know the story of Merlin, I have started my research and found a very interesting legends about Merlin, how he was created by demons to be an antichrist, while in the same legends he plays the positive role. I find the dual nature of Merlin very intriguing.

I wanted to try a technique I have never used before and decided to do the collage. This technique seemed to be difficult to me. My first try was very literate with no meaning behind it. Wizard looked like Gandalf the Grey or Dumbledore from Harry Potter movies.

At that point I looked in to a book "The age of collage. Contemporary collage in modern art" for more inspiration and got drawn to Edoardo de Falchi. According to de Falchi (2013, p 125) 'Collage techniques are a shortcut to image-processing... It could be a way to restore the truth, to erase a too-simple visual appearance, to emphasize a contrast, to create a reality out of its opposite. Or, just like a readymade work, a collage can be a gesture, simple as a conceptual switch of the context.'

Having that in mind for my final work I have decided to focus on duality of Merlin's nature. I have created another collage, for which I bought fashion magazine, the sun and a tv program paper. I also used some patterned craft paper.
My vision of Merlin is different to traditional images. His face has man's and woman's features. He has a body of a woman. Merlin is surrounded by magic and spells. Under Merlin's hands we can see elements of nature. He is in control of time and universe. In this collage I wanted to focus on a dual nature of Merlin and on his infinite power. Below you can see my final work.

Welcome to Spring term 2024!

My second term of studies begins now and I would like to spend a moment reflecting on a aspect of communication. During Christmas break I was visited by my family members and my parents and thought of communication came to my mind multiple times. Many times I was misunderstood or had incorrect impression on something that was said.

Communication in a family is one of the key aspects, as lack of clarity, assumptions or different perspectives can affect a relationship and cause a conflict. With all of my heart I was trying to understand other side's perspective and stay open to their point of view. Christmas holiday was spent in a nice atmosphere and with no issues, although some problems with communication occurred.

I have spend more time then usual watching films, getting up to date with some Polish movies, and one of the movies really touched me. The movie spoke about children, their problems and lack of understanding or communication with their families, which led to tragic finale.

The movie was created in 2018 by Marek Koterski, that is very well known movie director. He is famous for touching a real problems in a grotesque way. His movies are full of humour but also very difficult from the emotional point of view. The movie is called 7 emotions ( org, 7 uczuc) . And the main characters are children played by adult actors, that are also very well known in Poland.

As per cinemaparadiso.co.uk movie portal "Fear, anger, sadness, joy, disgust, jealousy, shame. Adas Miauczynski returns to his childhood, when - like most of us - he had a big problem with naming the accompanying emotions. To improve the quality of his adult life, he decides to return to that not-as it turns out-carefree period to learn to experience the seven basic feelings. This extremely unpredictable journey to the past abounds in a series of hilarious, even comic situations, but it also carries the power of emotion and reflection." (Cinema paradiso, 2018).

I found the movie very therapeutic as it has touched some of my childhood issues. Watching it with my parents was difficult. The tragic finale of the movie really hit me and made me rethink my ways of parenting. We all come from different backgrounds, different families, we all have our own luggage when creating a family. It's our responsibility to take care of children, help them understand their emotions, keep them out of serious responsibilities and issues for as long as possible and to communicate with them. Communication is also one of the key points of the movie 7 emotions.

And as said by American author and coach Tony Robins for inc.com "To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others" (Robins, 2019). To me this means that if we are about to communicate with a child, we supposed to put ourselves in their shoes, to be able to communicate with them effectively and to understand each other.

Reflection on second term.

Second term of my year zero at college comes to an end and I can admit now that I have created some more of the work I am proud off. Overa...
